Get to know the basic effects of paddle balls: Flat/Globe Effect

The padel is considered a friendly sport, mainly because it is flexible in terms of its technical and physical requirements for its players. Proof of this are the effects or basic strokes that must be learned when playing paddle tennis. Specifically, we refer to:

  • flat effect,
  • cut effect,
  • topspin effect
  • …and the side effect.

For this post, we will talk in detail about the first of these, the flat effect.

The flat effect is also known as Balloon

It's one of the Basic strokes that are learned when playing paddle tennis. It is characterized by being one of the simplest to execute, easy to learn and provides greater control over the ball.

It is done with a movement from back to front, where the racket is perpendicular to the ground, adjusting that the ball makes contact in the center of the racket. Depending on what you want to achieve, it can be done in two ways.

1.       Alto globe

It usually means contacting the ball at a lower level, where the player ends up swinging the racket up.

  1. fast balloon

The blow is delivered straight forward, decisively.

What is the plane/balloon effect for?

  • If we talk about tall balloons, this effect is applied as a defensive hit, its goal is to prevent the opposing player from being able to aggressively break returns.
  • If we talk about fast balloons, players implement this shot as part of attacking strategies, especially when opponents stand close to the net, leaving the back area unprotected.

How this effect is applied on the pitch

Depending on the player's strategy, it can be applied crosswise, near the line or in the middle of the pitch.

As the name suggests, it means that the path of the ball is diagonal, therefore the player has more room to work with spin. At the same time, the opponent finds it a bit difficult to make the move descent, while it is easier for the sender to execute tray.

  • Near the line / Tight Down the line

In this case it would be a quick balloon, unlike the previous technique, the space to work is tighter. However, for the opposing player it will be difficult to make technical balls or shots,

  • Through the middle

As in the previous technique, this would be a fast lob, as this direction tends to make it easier for opponents to do tray.

The importance of the plane/balloon effect

This effect can be used for both attack and defense. For example, fast balloons enhance the smash strong forward, increasing the chance of earning points.

The tall balloons meanwhile, they are especially useful when the opponent is constantly throwing smashes Y trays. When returning a high lob, the opponent should either wait for the ball to drop or press to the back of the court. With this, the sending player will have time to position himself again and recover.
